1TB RAID 0 Failure

Case Study: 110510

LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme We received a 1TB LaCie enclosure containing 4 250GB Maxtor Diamond Max 9 hard drives configured in a RAID 0. With LaCie enclosures it may also be configured in JBOD (just a bunch of disks). The drive was unable to become ready, and the ready light continued to flash without ever stabilizing.

We first analyzed the four drives in the array. It was found that one of the drives had suffered a mechanical failure. We then opened the drive in our clean room in order to determine if there was any obvious platter damage. The visible platter surface along with the filter and remaining enclosture area looked good. We then analyzed the system area of the drive to determine if the problem was rooted there, but all that did was confirm that the heads had indeed failed. A head swap was determined to be the next logical course of action. We imaged the remaining three drives. Since all four drives were perfect parts matches, we utilized one of the working drives as a source for new heads.

After the head swap the drive worked in a degraded but stable state. We utilized our disk imager to make a perfect clone of the drive. We then reassembled the array, and began the recovery process which resulted in a successful recovery of the customer's data.
